Legislative Consequences of the Grounding of the "Bunga Teratai Satu"
Amendments made to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act in 2001
On 19 July 2001, following the grounding of the "Bunga Teratai Satu" on 2 November 2000, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 ("the Act") was amended by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Amendment Act 2001 ("the Amendment Act"). The overall objective of the Amendment Act is to improve environmental protection of the Reef from oil pollution, ship grounding and illegal fishing. The important amendments are as follows.
